Prepare a funding enquiry without oversharing your case
A useful first enquiry helps you establish whether an organisation can discuss funding and what information it needs next. It does not require you to publish your employment history in an open form. This guide is about organising questions and locating records privately. It does not assess a dispute, select evidence for proceedings or recommend what you should disclose to an employer, tribunal or potential adviser.
Establish the recipient before collecting a bundle
Check the organisation and professional using the appropriate national register or directory, then confirm the contact channel independently. Ask whether it is accepting enquiries in your jurisdiction and what its initial review includes. If there is a charge for reading detailed material, ask for the amount, VAT treatment and scope before assuming an advertised first conversation includes a document review.
Do not send workplace records to this website. The optional form is for questions about the resource and is not a solicitor’s intake service. There is no provider network or referral arrangement here. A website enquiry does not create professional representation, trigger a funding decision or appoint somebody to monitor your matter while you wait.
Make an index rather than copying confidential content
Privately locate broad document categories such as contractual terms, relevant correspondence and any existing insurance or union information. A short index can show what you have without duplicating the contents. Keep original files and their context securely, and ask a verified adviser what they need and how it should be transferred. Do not assume that possessing an employer’s document authorises every use or disclosure.
The local checklist on the homepage records only whether you have marked categories as located. It has no upload or free-text case narrative. Downloading creates a TXT file on your device and does not send the list anywhere. Review that file before sharing it, especially if you later add personal notes outside the tool.
- Contract and written terms.
- Relevant correspondence kept securely.
- Policy and membership information.
- Proposed fee agreement and written answers.
Prepare questions about costs and responsibility
Ask what payment arrangement is proposed, which tasks are covered and how the fee base is defined. Ask separately about initial review charges, VAT, expenses, barristers and what happens if instructions stop. If an existing offer matters to the calculation, ask how the agreement records it. These questions help you understand a proposal without inventing a compensation value.
Also ask when the organisation would confirm it is acting and who is responsible for particular procedural steps. A response saying information will be reviewed is different from an accepted instruction. Keep unconfirmed matters labelled that way. If insurance or union support may be available, ask about approval before entering another paid arrangement rather than assuming later reimbursement.
Do not let preparation become a waiting period
For England, Wales and Scotland, Acas provides official information on early conciliation and tribunal time limits. For Northern Ireland, use the Labour Relations Agency’s separate information. This guide gives no exact deadline because the appropriate calculation depends on the circumstances and applicable procedure. Seek timely official information and, where needed, individual legal advice rather than waiting for a perfect document bundle.
End the preparation exercise with a small action list: the verified recipient, questions to ask, documents located and uncertainties to resolve. Do not turn the checklist into a verdict about eligibility, success or likely compensation. A funding provider’s decision concerns its proposed engagement; it should not be confused with a tribunal deciding your rights or with this independent site providing a legal assessment.
