Understand the basis
“No win no fee” is a headline. Ask for the actual agreement, its fee calculation, definition of success and work covered. Conditional and damages-based arrangements should not be treated as interchangeable labels.
INDEPENDENT EMPLOYMENT FUNDING INFORMATION
Understand the funding, separate the costs and prepare better questions before approaching a solicitor.
We are not a law firm or referral service. There is no provider network here, no case assessment and no offer of representation. These notes help you read funding information; they are not legal advice.

TIME-SENSITIVE? USE OFFICIAL ROUTES
Employment time limits can be short and depend on the claim and circumstances. Our worksheet does not calculate them. Read Acas time-limit guidance and seek appropriate advice promptly; an internal grievance does not change the tribunal time limit.
BEFORE YOU SIGN
A provider’s willingness to fund work is separate from your legal rights. A rejection does not decide whether a claim exists.
“No win no fee” is a headline. Ask for the actual agreement, its fee calculation, definition of success and work covered. Conditional and damages-based arrangements should not be treated as interchangeable labels.
Acas lists possible legal-support routes, including union membership and personal or home insurance. Check conditions before commissioning work. Membership or a policy document alone does not confirm funding approval.
Advice, settlement negotiations and tribunal representation are different tasks. Ask whether drafting, hearings, barristers, appeals and enforcement are included. Check initial review charges and what happens if you stop or change solicitors.

PUBLISHED EXAMPLES · NOT OUR OFFERS
Landau Law’s employment funding page says its fee is usually 25% plus VAT of what it negotiates or wins. Where an offer already exists, it describes applying the fee only to additional recovery. It also notes possible initial fixed review charges and additional tribunal costs, including barristers.
Stephensons’ employment page describes retaining up to 35% of settlement inclusive of VAT under its damages-based arrangement, with disbursements potentially separate.
Pages checked 6 November 2026. These are provider-specific published examples, not quotes, recommendations or universal caps. Availability, jurisdiction, exclusions and the written agreement require checking directly. Neither provider is affiliated with this site.
YOUR FIGURES · EXPLICIT ASSUMPTIONS
Enter an agreed fee base, not an estimated award. This calculates charges only: it cannot estimate compensation, tax on a settlement or what you would receive.

KEEP PREPARATION PRIVATE
Tick categories you have located, without entering their contents. Keep originals securely; share documents only with a verified adviser through an agreed channel. This checklist does not decide relevance or authorise disclosure of employer material.

START WITH THE RIGHT JURISDICTION
Acas covers England, Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland has separate employment institutions: use the Labour Relations Agency’s early conciliation information rather than assuming Acas procedures apply.
For professional checks, use the SRA register for England and Wales, the Law Society of Scotland directory or the Law Society of Northern Ireland directory. Confirm who will act and whether they cover your jurisdiction.
Use independently obtained contact details before sending money or documents. A directory listing does not promise suitable funding, current availability or a particular outcome.

READ THE DETAIL
Separate existing support from new paid work.
Identify the base, inclusions and stopping terms.
Ask for approval rather than assuming protection.
Match each task to the written scope.
Verify identity and jurisdiction independently.
Organise questions without oversharing documents.
MAKE THE COMPARISON USEFUL
Ask the provider to identify the precise sums used in its calculation. If an offer already exists, ask whether it is recorded and how any improvement is measured. Do not assume wages, notice payments, other payments and non-financial terms all receive identical treatment. Request a written explanation using the proposed agreement, rather than relying on a headline.
Our fee base is simply a number you choose for arithmetic. It is not a forecast of an award or an assessment of a settlement. A tidy total cannot tell you whether the contract uses the right base.
Keep unknown costs labelled unknown, not zero. A barrister, an initial document review or another expense may sit outside the percentage. Ask who approves additional spending, when payment becomes due and whether a separate agreement is needed. Entering zero in the worksheet is your assumption, not our confirmation that a charge does not exist.
Where fixed and percentage charges are alternatives, do not add them together in this tool. Where VAT is already included, do not apply it again. Ask the provider for a suitable worked explanation instead.
Ask when an enquiry becomes an instruction and which tasks the adviser has agreed to undertake. An acknowledgement, funding discussion or document request is not necessarily confirmation that someone is acting. Keep copies of the written scope and answers, together with any questions still awaiting a reply.
Funding, professional identity and procedure are separate checks. Completing one does not complete the others. Our downloads organise questions only; they do not verify cover, accept instructions or notify an official body.
No lawyer reviewer is claimed. Sources support general information, not individual advice. We do not recommend a funding route, assess merits or promise eligibility, savings or success. Obtain professional advice about your own circumstances.
